GGG vs Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko in the Vegas Strip Clubs (Updated)

For the IBF and IBO Middleweight Boxing Titles on Saturday, October 5

On Saturday, October 5, Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin, aka “GGG,” will fight Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko at Madison Square Garden in NYC for the IBF and IBO middleweight boxing titles. Promoters are billing this as the Big Drama Show.

GGG, one of the all-time great middleweight fighters, lost the WBA, WBC and IBO middleweight titles to Canelo Alvarez last year, the only loss in his 41-fight career (and it was not by unanimous decision).  Of GGG’s 39 wins (he had one draw against Alvarez as well), 35 are by knockout.

Unfortunately for GGG, he can’t just refight Alvarez for the WBA and WBC titles. He has to earn his way back to Canelo piece by piece.  And the first leg of the road back to Alvarez is to beat Derevyanchenko, a fighter with a 13-1 record who is 4 years younger.

The WBA attempted to get a fight between Derevyanchenko and Alvarez scheduled, but Alvarez failed to agree to a deal. So, Alvarez was stripped of his IBF title (which he’d won from GGG) and that title will now go to the winner of the GGG-Derevyanchenko fight.

For Derevyanchenko, this will be the biggest fight of his career, as he is out to prove himself more worthy of a shot at Alvarez than GGG. Of Derevyanchenko’s 13 wins, 10 were by KO, so both of these fighters are hard punchers. And Derevyanchenko’s one loss, like GGG’s, was not by unanimous decision.

So this should be one helluva battle. Neither fighter has ever been KOd, and both expect to win by KO. The Vegas sports books will be packed. The oddsmakers are putting their money on GGG, making him a 3-1 favorite.  As always, the best place to watch the fight will be in one of the best Vegas strip clubs, with topless beauties ready to sooth your nerves as the battle gets bloody.
