The London Abused Women’s Centre is protesting and boycotting London’s upcoming “Take Back the Night” event – an international march and rally that takes place in hundreds of cities in 30 countries with the mission of ending sexual, relationship, and domestic violence.
Why is a group that supports abused women boycotting an event that raises money for and awareness of women who suffer domestic violence?
Because one of the participants in the event is The Pole House, a fitness studio that conducts classes in pole dancing (plus yoga, aerial acrobatics, fitness classes, etc).
According to IFPress.com, the London Abused Women’s Centre says pole dancing “ignores violence against women,” and, “This is a feminist event and pole dancing is not an act of feminism, it is opposing feminism. We will not solve women’s suppression by dancing on a pole.”
The Pole House is not a strip club or topless bar – it’s a fitness studio. The students are scheduled to do a demonstration of pole dancing in Victoria Park (Sept 15) as part of “Take Back the Night” as an act of women’s empowerment.
