I interviewed three male porn stars at the 2018 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo and asked all of them how they got into the business. You can read their answers in So You Wanna Be a Porn Star.
One of the guys I interviewed was Logan Pierce, XRCO New Stud award winner of 2013 and AVN 2015 nominee for Best Three-Way Sex Scene for his role in The Submission of Emma Marx. Pierce had recently written a book titled Between the Sheets: Rise of a Working Stiff. He told me the book was a collection of true stories from a journal he’d kept about his first year in the adult film industry.
I didn’t know what to expect from a book written by a porn actor, but to my surprise I found the book well-written and hard to put down. You see these porn actors and you wonder, who is that guy and how did he get that job? You wonder what kind of money they’re making. All you see is people having sex, but you wonder not only how they feel about it but how they feel about all the people standing around with cameras and microphones pointed at them.

Between the Sheets, written under the pen name J.R. Verlin, answers those questions. You’re literally in this guy’s head as he goes through his day. This is not technically a guide to how to become a male porn actor, but it is a good description of how Pierce did it by connecting with porn stars through social media. One of the stars hooks him up with an agent and the next thing he knows he’s shooting a sex scene to see if he’s got what it takes. He does.
We watch him try to maintain a relationship with his college girlfriend as his new career takes off. We watch him deal with a porn actress so bitchy that he can’t get it up for their scene and gets sent home without pay.
We follow him as he develops a new relationship with a fellow XXX actress until he gets jealous over her work with James Deen.
Pierce also discusses the adult world’s many pitfalls, including the booze, drugs and hard partying that he watches destroy friends’ careers. At one point he gets the clap, which puts him out of work until he tests clean again.
But mostly, he has an unbelievably great time and can hardly believe he’s being paid to fuck gorgeous women every day. Here he is, shooting his very first porn scene, with a strawberry blonde in daisy dukes who turns him on right away:
It was textbook porn; everything I had come to know and revere. And it was so perfect, even with Duke lurching over my shoulder, breathing down my neck the entire time as he monitored the action to guarantee clear shots of the penny. I guess I should have found that a bit strange; most people would probably find it, at the very least, distracting, but not me. Having a voyeur actually turned me on, made me feel coveted. I was firing on all cylinders, proving my worth, and showcasing my talent.
He comes too fast, but channeling Dirk Diggler, announces he can do it again. A star is born.
